i made it myself: upcycled straw coasters with wool felt

Monday, October 6th, 2008

I found these little straw coasters and they were just begging for a makeover. I used wool from the sleeves of my felted sweater stash. I can’t decide which set I like more: the lights or the brights. I hope they find a happy home through my etsy shop. I had lots of fun making them.

only 47 more days until halloween

Around here on the blog, though, you’d think it was already October! I’ve been busy sewing up some orange and black goodness that I wanted to share with you. It all started with a doodle.

Then, M and I were sorting through (playing with) fabric, and I got inspired to make her a trick or treat bag.* It turned out so cute, I made a bunch more.

Then I sewed up a stack of Halloween cards. I’ve been trying to do more things with my left over stash from paper trade shows. I made these cards out of Fox River Confetti paper. (Love, love, LOVE this paper!)

There’s more coming. Remember how I said I was becoming slightly addicted to amigurumi? I’ve got two little pumpkins on my windowsill looking for a new home. I hope to get a picture posted soon. I also may have possibly bought some glow in the dark yarn for a little amigurumi ghost. Oh, and I was thinking a little black cat might be cute to make, too.

All in good time, my little pretties.

*No, I’m not taking her around this year to collect a bunch of sugar. She’s still too young. She’ll probably just stash her keys, phone and baby Elmo in her bag. What? Like you don’t have a baby Elmo in your bag.

i made it myself: felt board

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I saw this tutorial for a felt board and knew instantly I wanted to make one for M. I used my Michael’s coupon for the canvas and my Joann’s coupon for the felt. Usually handmade doesn’t mean inexpensive, especially when it comes to knitting, but this project was easy on the budget and easy to make.

The best payoff is that M totally loves it. I think the first time I gave it to her she played with it for over an hour. That’s like an eternity in toddler time! In fact, while I was writing this, she saw her picture and then went to the closet and pulled it out!

notecards

Have you ever had an idea in your head that won’t go away? These notecards have been buzzing around in my brain for months. I got the idea one day while sitting at my desk staring at a big bag of buttons. They were designed in my head for a few weeks when I finally needed to just sit down and get them out. I waited until M was taking a nap, did the layout, went to print them out and kablamo. Our printer jammed. Not just a little paper jam, but the ink carriage jammed. So then I had to wait for T fix the printer, which consisted of taking it apart, troubleshooting the RIP software and finally replacing a bad ink cartridge. Phew! I can’t believe how long it took me to finally get these cards out of my head and finished! Now they’re up in my shop. Price: $12.

I like cafepress.com, I really do, but it bugs me that I can’t mix and match notecards within a set. I am going to have to talk to T about nobrainer printing my notecards in the future. In the meantime, I have a some sets of eight cards with two each of peach, pizza, shrimp and cheesecake.

M is totally in love with this song. T plays the video for her on his iPhone. I think I need to buy Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts just so I can make this for her.

food-on-a-stick notecards

Last August we went to the Nebraska State Fair. We hadn’t been to a state fair in years and I was surprised how many different kinds of foods you can buy on a stick. Some seemed normal enough for state fair fare, but a pork chop on a stick? Pizza on a stick? Fried peach on a stick? I started snapping pictures and an idea was born.

Food-on-a-stick notecards!

They are available at cafepress.com/food_on_a_stick and they’d make great holiday gifts (wink, wink). I hope to do more notecards in the future, but now I’m busy with my other project (also great for holiday gifts, wink, wink). In the meantime, go get a slice of cheesecake on a stick!

strike?

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Have y’all heard there is a writers’ strike? Did you hear that bloggers are striking in solidarity with the WGA? In case you were wondering, I’m not on strike. It would have been a good cover story, though; a good excuse for the lack of entries.

There’s a reason for the blog silence. I’ve been working my butt off on a new project. Two new projects, actually. I’ll post details soon. In the meantime, check out this cool hand-knit sweater from Grandmom K. It fits Bella perfectly!

are you still there?

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I know. It’s been awhile. Two weeks to be exact! My parents’ visit was fun and I don’t really know where the time went. We got a lot done in two weeks. I can’t even remember it all. Here are the highlights:

  • Used our gift cards to Baby Gap and got a really cute bunting for Bella and some tights to wear with her winter jumpers.
  • Used our gift card to Borders Bookstore in Omaha to buy some books for Bella.
  • Used our Melting Pot gift card to celebrate T’s birthday.
  • Put an end to T’s endless question: “Should I get an iPhone?”
  • Sewed and lined my first recycled, felted sweater purse.
  • Sewed my first piece of clothing for Bella: a sleep sack.
  • Went through all of Bella’s 0-12 month clothes. Packed up all of the non-pink stuff for Lauren. (I’m not sure what I’m going to do with all of the pink stuff.)
  • Washed (thanks Mom!) and sorted all of Bella’s winter clothes.
  • Turned the half-way point on my parents’ afghan.
  • Knit a House Hat for my Dad’s birthday present in Oriole’s colors.
  • Settled a Very Stressful Legal Thing that has been hanging over our heads for the last three years.
  • Celebrated an early Thanksgiving.
  • Oh, and I can’t forget to mention that my daughter is drinking WHOLE MILK. Can you believe it? I really pushed the limits while my parents were here because I figured I’d have help if she got fussy from a dairy stomach ache. She only broke out once and that was the day after we went to the Melting Pot. I guess the cheese fondue was a little too much! But I’ve been adding a little bit of dairy every day and she’s been doing really well with 5-10 ounces of whole milk a day. I think we are turning the corner on her dairy intolerance. Woo hoo!
