happy halloween!
Friday, October 31st, 2008ketchup goes with everything
Thursday, October 30th, 2008My parents arrived yesterday and we went to lunch after I picked them up from the airport. We ordered M’s lunch right away because I could tell she was hungry. By the time our food arrived, she was ready for her dessert: a peanut butter cookie. She also spied my little condiment cup of ketchup. I was hungry, so I just passed it on to her and started eating my lunch. A few minutes later, I really paid attention to what she was doing:

Yep. She’s dipping her cookie in the ketchup. And loving every bit of it!
sunday at the pumpkin patch
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008On Sunday we went to Roca Berry Farm with the Dawes to pick pumpkins. It was chilly and windy, but that didn’t bother Bella and Mason one bit. (The adults had warm coffee, thank goodness!) It was a cute farm with lots for kids to do. Bella liked the flowers and running over the bridge best.

We took a hayride (hayrack ride if you live in NE) through the woods and picked our pumpkins right off the vine.

We picked a nice big orange one for our porch, Bella picked a little green one (which sadly is already turning soft), and bought some little gourds for the kitchen. I also bought a butternut squash and made soup and fresh bread for dinner. It was a beautiful day. You know your child has really enjoyed herself when she comes home with muddy pants and a smile so big it lasts all day.
the candy corn winner is…

i made it myself: candy corn amigurumi giveaway
Monday, October 20th, 2008
The other day I was discussing my amigurumi addiction with Lauren. “I have to stop,” I said. “It’s getting out of control. Bella doesn’t need anymore little hippos, pumpkins, vampires, cats, etc.” She suggested that maybe I start giving them away. Aha! A giveaway! And just in time for Halloween!
What the winner will get: This cute amigurumi candy corn, which is totally fat free and has zero calories! It’s crocheted out of soft acrylic yarn and stuffed with polyester fiberfil. Eyes and mouth are embroidered on, so it’s safe (and washable!) if you want to give it to a little one. It’s about three inches tall and two inches wide at the base.

Here’s the skinny (ha, ha): Leave a comment before Wednesday, midnight CST and tell me about your favorite Halloween treat. M will draw a name out of a hat on Thursday and I’ll announce the winner on the blog.
Oh, and in case you are wondering, my favorite Halloween treats are mini twix bars.
Did you make something yourself? Post it here!
i think we need one more debate
Thursday, October 16th, 2008This time, I want to hear Joe the Plumber debate Joe Sixpack. What do you think? Would you tune in?
mama’s little helper
Wednesday, October 15th, 2008Yesterday, while M was playing with her music bench, the batteries died. I was tired. I suggested that maybe Dad could fix it when he got home. No sooner were the words out of my mouth I thought, “Who am I? What am I teaching my daughter? Wait for someone else to change batteries?” I told her to carry the bench out into the living room and I would get a screwdriver. When I came back, she already had the bench upside down and was working on it! She had gone into her closet and pulled out her little wooden screwdriver puzzle piece. It was so cute!

I used the real screwdriver, pulled out the batteries, and she took them over to the trash. Then we put everything back together, turned on the bench and she continued on with her dancing. Oh, and we did a high five and she exclaimed, “We did it!”
Today, I sat at my desk looking at the wilted daylillies I had asked T to pull the last time he cut the grass. I was avoiding them because of my allergies, but couldn’t stand looking at them anymore. I took my little helper outside and she cut the front lawn while I trimmed the daylillies.

I love how she loves to help out! She likes to fold laundry, sweep the floor and dust with the feather duster. Well, she hands me each piece of laundry out of the basket so I can fold it. And she walks around with her mini dustpan and brush, but doesn’t actually do a lot of sweeping. With the feather duster, though, she actually manages to really dust. She does all of this with such joy and enthusiasm! Sometimes her excitement actually rubs off on me, but I doubt you’ll ever hear me say, “Yay for laundry!”
trick or treat bags featured on mighty junior!
Friday, October 10th, 2008Have you heard of this site before? It’s cool! Mighty Junior is a kid-centric shopping and design blog, and a sister site to Mighty Goods. I received a note from them the other day that they had featured my trick or treat bags on their site.

Kind of makes me wish I had made more! Today I sold one of my Halloween cards and in the comments, she mentioned that she found me on Mighty Junior. Sweet!
glow in the dark ghost pattern
Thursday, October 9th, 2008A few weeks ago I totally got sucked in by Halloween marketing. “We’ve got glow in the dark yarn!” screamed the ad. “Wow! That would make a cool amigurumi ghost!” I thought. I marched off with my 40% of coupon, got my yarn, and then came home to look for a pattern. But I couldn’t find any I really liked, so I just improvised. You’ve already seen the first one.* I like this one a little better, especially with the picot ruffles at the base. This little ghost is for sale in my etsy shop, but if you know how to crochet, don’t buy it from me unless you’re really busy saving lives or something because it takes no time at all to whip one up. Heck, crochet a whole pile of them and string them together to make a Halloween garland!
*By the way, when T turned out the light and the little ghost started to glow, M handed it right back to him. It’s sitting on my windowsill now keeping my pumpkin and apple company.

Glow in the Dark Ghost with Picot Ruffles
materials:
glow in the dark yarn or any worsted weight white yarn
size G/6 (4mm) crochet hook
two black beads for eyes
black yarn for smile
tapestry needle for beads and weaving ends
optional: polyester fiberfil
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
R1: chain 2, sc 6 in second chain from hook
mark the beginning of your row, move your marker up on each completed row
R2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12 stitches)
R3: *sc 1, sc 2 in next stitch* around (18 stitches)
R4: *sc 2, sc 2 in next stitch* around (24 stitches)
R5-7: sc around
R8 : sc 9, sc with bead, sc 3, sc with bead, sc 10
R9-15: sc around
R16: *[sl st, chain 3, sl into same st] sc* around for picot edging
Tie off, sew on a little smile, and weave in your ends.
I didn’t crochet a base because of the picot ruffle. Not to say that it couldn’t be done. This is more decoration than a toy, so I stuffed it with fiberfil to give it shape, but it’s open on the bottom.
my favorite two people
Wednesday, October 8th, 2008
I have lots of pictures like this. I love their spontaneity. I like catching The Moment. There is something here that you just can’t capture in a portrait studio. Unfortunately, they’re usually in the same spot, in front of the window. In the mornings they are blown out and in the evenings they are grainy or blurry. That’s ok. It’s the moment of the picture I love, not the quality.

Yesterday was T’s birthday. I had hoped to post these yesterday, but we were too busy enjoying the day. I love you, sweetheart! Happy Belated-Blog-Post-Birthday to the best husband and dad in the world! xox
