i’ve been a busy bee

Friday, February 29th, 2008

My etsy shop has been a little empty because I’ve been busy with lots of custom bag orders. This past week, I finished four bags and I have another one left to do. I’ve also been inspired by St. Patrick’s Day and have been working on some green items. I’ll post them in the next few days. Meanwhile, here are the latest bags.

letter of the day is O

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Bella talks on the phone with her Kundhi grandparents a lot. I imagine it must be hard on the other end trying to talk to a toddler, especially when she keeps saying the same thing over and over. Bella loves to say “O” and has even created her own sign language for toasted oats: pointing in her hand. T is setting up my old laptop for his parents so they can video chat with us. I’m sure they can’t wait!

blog tag

Monday, February 25th, 2008

1. Once you’ve been tagged, you have to write a blog with ten weird, random things, facts, or habits about yourself.
2. At the end, you choose five people to be tagged, listing their names and why you chose them to be tagged.
3. Don’t forget to leave them a comment “You’re It!” and to read your blog.
4. You can’t tag the person who tagged you. Since you can’t tag me back, let me know when you’ve posted your blog so I can see your answers.

I was tagged by Christy. It was hard to come up with 10 weird things about myself, because I don’t think these are weird. I’ll admit some people may, though.

  1. I own both the Buffy and Angel series on DVD and watch them regularly.
  2. I had my nose pierced back in college, before “everyone was doing it.”
  3. I’ve been using the same brand facial moisturizer since I was 13: Oil of Olay.
  4. I’ve been using the same brand and color lip gloss since I got married: MAC Lipglass in Love Child.
  5. I rarely wear makeup anymore (except for the lip gloss) and I don’t miss it.
  6. I drink a big glass of seltzer with a splash of cranberry juice almost every day (sometimes twice!).
  7. I sleep with earplugs and still wake up at the littlest noise.
  8. I can wiggle my little toe without moving the rest of my toes or foot.
  9. I sometimes write blog entries in my head about events while they are still happening.
  10. I love to smell my daughter’s hair, especially right after bath time.

I’m tagging Nebraska friends because my east coast peeps are blogless. Sarah, Liz, Joanne, Tana, and Amy, you’re it!

Remember the knit Ferrari? I think this is even cooler: handbags designed from vintage auto fabrics.

feed me friday: craftzine

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Since my last feed me friday post, I’ve done a clean sweep of my rss feeds. It was getting out of control—there was no way I could keep up. Now that I have a much smaller feed list, I’m actually reading more stuff. One blog I visit every day is the Craftzine.com blog. There is so much inspiration on this blog and there are multiple posts a day. The entries are short and sweet with a link. They don’t take a long time to read, but you always know where to go for the details. My favorite entry from yesterday: Crochet Oreo Cookies. Don’t they look yummy?!

p.s. I finished my first book of 2008. There are eight days left in February and I have a very short book on my list that I think I can read over the next week to get caught up: Who Moved My Cheese?

do you see what I see?

When I got our Newsweek this week, I took a look a the cover and thought something looked very familiar. A quick google image search confirmed it.

obama kennedy

Do you think the art director told the photographer, “I want that Jackie look. You know the one—the Time magazine cover look.”

Has the media’s comparison of the Obamas to the Kennedys gotten a little out of hand or is this just a crazy coincidence?

Actually, the cover is a full length photo of Michelle, whose complete outfit looks a lot like this one. I think the picture inside looks a little more like her own style.

sleep sack #2

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Remember my first sleep sack? I finished the other one and just in time. Bella had outgrown her size medium Halo sacks, so I had to get this one done. I just love these sacks. The fleece is so soft and warm—much cozier than the Halo sacks. They make me want to sew one in a grownup size.

Today Bella opened her first door. We’re off to Target to get some door knob covers.

UPDATE: Somehow we went out for door knob covers and came home with new living room furniture. Not sure how that happened.

UPDATE 2: Made it to Target, bought some sale stuff for the house. Forgot the darn door knob covers!

dishcloth knitting

Hey knitters! Want to be part of a dishcloth exhibit? Details are over at Stitch Marker. Let me know if you’re joining in on the fun. Oh, and if you are local, let’s combine shipping!

plastic-bag bags

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Remember when I had that cute-as-a-button card idea in my head and it just wouldn’t go away until I made them? Well, I’ve had another idea bouncing around in the ol’ cabeza for awhile: knitting with grocery bags. I didn’t invent the idea. Lots of people have been doing it for years. We even had a program on it at knitting group last month. That’s what really got me excited to try it. I had wound some plastic bag “yarn” using the loop method and planned to knit up two squares to make a zippered tote. I had an eight-inch zipper recycled from a pair of T’s old pants that I was going to use.

Well, knitting with double-thick Target bag yarn was horrible. The bags are sticky and even with size 13 straights, knitting a square was brutal on my wrists. I couldn’t bear another square, so I folded it in half, seamed up the sides, and made a clutch instead.

I was surprised at how frustrating it was to knit this up, especially because the resulting knit “fabric” is so flexible. It’s actually kind of soft. And I really liked the texture.

The lining came from the same pants as the zipper. Sewing that in was also a challenge!

Even after I finished this project, I still couldn’t let go of the idea. I wanted a successful project. So I wound some more plastic yarn using a very cool single-ply method that Jennifer showed us at knitting group. Unfortunately, Jennifer is blogless, but she brought some very cool items for show-n-tell. She’s crocheted rugs, totes and even place mats out of bags. A few weeks ago she showed me how to make a crocheted tote bag. Here’s the base:

I like how this is shaping up much better and it is much easier to crochet the single-ply yarn. I also like the texture; it kind of looks like a woven basket.

The only problem is now that I’ve had some success, my interest has kind of dropped off a little bit. I do a few rounds here and there, but not every day. Don’t expect any updates on this project anytime soon. Maybe in a few months I’ll have some progress to show.
