new music + book!

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

It’s a little bit like Christmas around here with all of the packages I received in the mail yesterday. I’ve had really good luck with Swaptree—I’m up to 34 trades! My goal was to use all of the books, music and movies we didn’t want anymore to get digital versions of what we had on cassette and vhs. Recently added to our collection:

  • Songs of Faith and Devotion – Shut up! I still love these guys even though they are apparently not cool anymore.
  • Time Capsule – No music collection is complete without Rock Lobster!
  • Wonderland – This was an impulse “Get it Now” choice.
  • I also got a copy of The Namesake, which is my book-to-read in February.

Today I also redeemed an iTunes card I’ve had sitting around for almost two years. I was worried it might no longer work, but it did. (Yes, I had an iTunes card sitting around for that long. Note: this is NOT a good gift idea for me.) I bought Cruel and Gentle Things. (Charlie Sexton. Swoon!)

    bella’s hat + mittens

    Monday, January 28th, 2008

M got this cute pea coat from Lauren and Paul and didn’t have any hats or mittens to match. I decided to knit them for her out of some Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride I had leftover from another project. The hat was finished awhile ago, but I just finished up the mittens last week. You can’t tell in the picture, but I had to finish the cuffs with a little bit of black. Both were knit top down and it’s a good thing, too. The hat fits perfectly, but I bound off the mittens a little too tight. They work now, but next year I’ll probably have to redo the edge so they slip over her hands. I knit both of these a little big and I hope she gets another winter season out of them.

    sweaterama

    Saturday, January 26th, 2008

I got a bunch of new sweaters today. I’m getting better with my choices through experience. My first bags have helped me decide which sweaters will felt and sew up the best.

I also made a sweater bag for myself! I figured I should have some real-world experience with what I am making. So far I absolutely love it! It’s given me the itch to sew, but my walking foot broke when I was finishing my bag and I’m waiting on a replacement.

Also, I was really excited to get this feedback from my sage green bag:

LOVE this bag!!! I have been getting lots of inquiries and compliments on it, too. VERY well-made!! Thank you!!

There’s something about getting feedback like that from someone I don’t know that is really exciting. It makes me energized to get creating. C’mon walking foot! Get here soon, please!

feed me friday: one crafty mumma

    Friday, January 25th, 2008

This list of blogs in my rss feed is quite long and sometimes I get behind reading them all. One that I read almost daily is One Crafty Mumma. She has a Bella, too! I think I found her during Handmade for the Holidays over at Sew, Mama, Sew! last year. (Hey, Christy! Do those tree ornaments look familiar?) I also love her birthday invitations that were featured on Craftzine. There is so much crafty goodness to explore on her blog!

M and I are cuddled up on the couch under a blanket…

T: What are you reading? The Uline catalog?
    M: Dawwwg!
T: There are no dogs in the Uline catalog.
    J: Yes there are.
    T: Nuh uh.
    J: Yuh huh.

M and I flip through to the front of the catalog…

    J: See?
    M: Dawwwg!

    sewing for baby d.

    Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

I was invited to two showers for Baby D. and there was no way I could knit something for both, so I planned to sew something for the second one. Since Snoopy is his nursery theme, I went searching online and found the cutest fabric for a blanket! I was originally going to sew the Super Quick + Easy Baby Quilt, but I didn’t have the right embroidery stitch on my machine. I tried the zig zag workaround, but that didn’t work well with the fleece. After trying a few ideas, I finally decided on simple, parallel lines. I love the way this turned out and it was really fun to make.

I’d also been itching to make a Wee Bunny, and I thought it would be fun to make one out of matching fabric. He turned out so well, I think I need to make another one for me. (I had a hard time letting this little guy go!)

    notecards

Have you ever had an idea in your head that won’t go away? These notecards have been buzzing around in my brain for months. I got the idea one day while sitting at my desk staring at a big bag of buttons. They were designed in my head for a few weeks when I finally needed to just sit down and get them out. I waited until M was taking a nap, did the layout, went to print them out and kablamo. Our printer jammed. Not just a little paper jam, but the ink carriage jammed. So then I had to wait for T fix the printer, which consisted of taking it apart, troubleshooting the RIP software and finally replacing a bad ink cartridge. Phew! I can’t believe how long it took me to finally get these cards out of my head and finished! Now they’re up in my shop. Price: $12.

    pay per post

    Monday, January 21st, 2008

You may have noticed I have a payperpost button in my sidebar. I wanted to try it out a little bit before I wrote my review. So far I’ve been really pleased with my experience. I first heard about it through Christy’s blog. (A lot of good ideas come from her blog!) I figure I’m already pretty open with my opinions, so why not get paid for them? It only took a few days for them to approve my blog. It also didn’t take them long to approve my post.

I don’t expect to make tons of money with this. However, if someone wants to give me a few bucks to write about my favorite things, that’s cool with me! The only thing that bugs me is that my Google rank is kind of low. This doesn’t allow me a lot of opportunities about which to write. I was all excited to write about how much I loved my baby sling, but my little ol’ blog didn’t qualify for me to do so. Anyone out there want to link to my blog?

Now all I need to do is figure out a way to get KitchenAid to pay me for all the love I show them. Ha!

    mmm… the peacock

    Saturday, January 19th, 2008

There’s a new Indian restaurant in town and it is fabulous! It serves some traditional northern dishes, but its focus is on southern Indian food. Ever since our trip to Madurai, I’ve been a little obsessed with Tamil cuisine. (There are some beautiful photos of Madurai here on flickr. Yes, everything there really is that colorful!)

Here’s a review of The Peacock. I can’t wait to try their buffet and get a sampling of all of their food!
