slice of summer

Monday, October 29th, 2007

It’s getting colder and colder in Nebraska. We’ve had frost a few mornings, but nothing cold enough to shut down the sprinkler system. Wednesday it looks like it will be below freezing; just in time for the trick or treaters. I’m glad Bella doesn’t understand going door to door in the cold for miniature candy bars yet.

So, I’ve got one more story from summer to post to the blog before it gets really cold. I can’t remember which month this actually happened, but Bella was walking, so it had to be after we got home from England. We had just finished eating dinner and it had started to rain. It was one of those weird rains where the sun was shining and the wind was still. There was no lightening or thunder. It was incredibly warm. Bella and I went on the front porch to check out the rain drops.

Then, on a whim, I decided to take her into the rain. It was coming down pretty steady, and we were drenched fairly quickly, but it was warm and fun. Bella ran around in the grass and kept pulling at her wet, clingy clothes, so I stripped her down to her diaper. The neighborhood kids came over with an umbrella for her, but she didn’t want anything to do with it. She wanted to be in the rain.

At first, T thought we were crazy. Then he came outside in a t-shirt and his bathing suit. I came inside to get dry and watched the two of them run around on the lawn. In hindsight, I can’t believe I didn’t take any pictures. I was just so high from the moment, I guess I’d never forget it.

Now it’s getting cold and pretty soon those warm raindrops will become cold snow. I can’t wait for Bella to experience running around trying to catch flakes on her tongue. When it gets really chilly, I’ll have to remember the summer rain. Maybe it will help keep my toes warm.

maybe she prefers pie?

Pull up a chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee and put your feet up because I think this is the longest it has ever taken a child to taste her first piece of cake. (Seriously, folks. This video takes like 15 minutes to load. Go grab that coffee.) For the record, when we had our Thanksgiving dinner with my parents, she devoured her pumpkin pie. Yeah. She knows the good stuff.

nancy j. needs your help

I recently received an email from Nancy J. in Omaha whose friend is stationed in Afghanistan and is looking for hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters and blankets for children who don’t have warm clothing. She’s hoping that some folks who knit, crochet or sew could dig around in their stashes and make something to help keep these kids warm.

She sends a box or two a month and will be doing this for the next 15 months or so. She also sends over things like backpacks, pens, notebooks, rulers, pencils, crayons, coloring books, calculators, soccer balls and footballs (deflated), hackey sacks, yo-yos, jax sets, beanie babies, and thermoses for water.

Oh, and the warm clothing doesn’t have to be handmade, so if you’re not crafty, but still want to send something warm, that’s ok, too.

I’m going to dig in the stash and make some hats. If you’d like to coordinate with Nancy J. and send some items, you can reach her at janousek2 (at) cox (dot) net. Or leave me a comment and I’ll email you her cell phone number.

are you still there?

I know. It’s been awhile. Two weeks to be exact! My parents’ visit was fun and I don’t really know where the time went. We got a lot done in two weeks. I can’t even remember it all. Here are the highlights:

  • Used our gift cards to Baby Gap and got a really cute bunting for Bella and some tights to wear with her winter jumpers.
  • Used our gift card to Borders Bookstore in Omaha to buy some books for Bella.
  • Used our Melting Pot gift card to celebrate T’s birthday.
  • Put an end to T’s endless question: “Should I get an iPhone?”
  • Sewed and lined my first recycled, felted sweater purse.
  • Sewed my first piece of clothing for Bella: a sleep sack.
  • Went through all of Bella’s 0-12 month clothes. Packed up all of the non-pink stuff for Lauren. (I’m not sure what I’m going to do with all of the pink stuff.)
  • Washed (thanks Mom!) and sorted all of Bella’s winter clothes.
  • Turned the half-way point on my parents’ afghan.
  • Knit a House Hat for my Dad’s birthday present in Oriole’s colors.
  • Settled a Very Stressful Legal Thing that has been hanging over our heads for the last three years.
  • Celebrated an early Thanksgiving.
  • Oh, and I can’t forget to mention that my daughter is drinking WHOLE MILK. Can you believe it? I really pushed the limits while my parents were here because I figured I’d have help if she got fussy from a dairy stomach ache. She only broke out once and that was the day after we went to the Melting Pot. I guess the cheese fondue was a little too much! But I’ve been adding a little bit of dairy every day and she’s been doing really well with 5-10 ounces of whole milk a day. I think we are turning the corner on her dairy intolerance. Woo hoo!

    curried lentils + spinach

We’re busy getting ready for my parents’ visit. The basement is finished! All that is left for us to do before they get here is set up the bed. Last night we cleaned the bathroom and vacuumed the carpet. It’s amazing how easy new bathrooms are to clean! It’s also amazing how you can vacuum a carpet over and over and still find bits of construction stuff. I think we are going to have to vacuum one more time before M can go downstairs and play.

Nancy requested the Curried Lentils and Spinach recipe. This originally came from somewhere on the Internet, but I modified it beyond recognition. I guess it’s fair to call it a Kundhi original now. Teresa, if you liked the Saag at House of India, you are going to LOVE this!

    1-1/2 t curry powder
    1/2 t ground cumin
    1/2 t ground ginger
    1/4 t turmeric
    1/4 t cayenne
    1 medium onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, crushed and minced (or more if you like garlic!)
1 lb bag of lentils, picked through and rinsed
1 10-oz pkg chopped spinach, thawed
6 cups of water (or chicken/veggie stock)
1 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes

Sauté the onion in a little oil until it starts to get brown around the edges. Add the garlic and sauté another two minutes. Combine with all of the other ingredients except the tomatoes in your crock pot. Cook until lentils are tender. Stir in can of tomatoes and serve with plain yogurt if you like. (I’d like some yogurt, but can’t have it yet. Soon I hope!)

This makes a lot, but freezes really well.
