  • And one big thing: Yesterday our daughter turned one year old. I have a post I’ve been working on for that. More to come.

    controlled chaos

Drywall is being delivered today. They start hanging tomorrow. We’ve been busy finishing up all of those lingering projects downstairs. T is running the last of the wire and moving all of the big items into the storage area. I’ve been going through the remaining small stuff. Today was trash day and it was so tempting just to put everything outside, but I’ve been good. I sorted stuff for recycling and donations. I can’t believe how many cardboard boxes I’ve broken down! It’s been a few really late nights, but we’ll be done in time. We’ve also learned that M has been blessed with T’s sleep gene. She has slept through hammering, drilling, and just general loudness. It’s quite unbelievable.

The other cool thing is that we’ve brought our kitchen table upstairs (finally!). It’s not quite finished, so I’m going to have to get something to protect the top until we can stain it (the same color as our cabinets). The base just needs a clear coat over the black. I think it turned out really well and looks great in the space.

    pool

Bella had her first dip in a pool on Sunday. We went to the car club’s annual member party and took Bella for a swim. She loves being in the tub and didn’t really have any issues with being wet, but she was definitely nervous. I think it was just because the pool was so big. The water was also a little chilly. She looked cute in her little wet suit, though.

clean out the crisper carrot soup

    Saturday, August 25th, 2007

    6-8 small to medium carrots
    1 small onion
    3 stalks of celery
    1 medium potato
    3 small cloves of garlic
    1 turkey picked of meat
    handful of chopped mint leaves
    1 T olive oil
    1 T smart balance
    1/2 t curry powder
    1/4 cinnamon
    1/4 t ginger powder
    1/4 t cayenne pepper
    salt and pepper to taste

Put the turkey bones in a pot, cover with water, and boil for 1-2 hours. Meantime, peel and chop the carrots, onion and celery. (I sliced them in the food processor.) Peel and cube the potato. Peel and press the garlic.

Heat the smart balance and olive oil in another pot. Add all veggies except potatoes. Sauté until they start to sweat. Add potatoes and stir. Put a wire mesh strainer over the pot and pour/strain stock into the pot. Cover and let simmer until veggies are tender.

Depending on your bird, how much stock you have and how thick/thin you like your soup, you may want to remove some of the stock. I took out about 2-3 cups. Use in other recipes or freeze. Puree the remaining veggies and stock in a food processor or with an immersion blender. Add spices and mint. Salt and pepper to taste.

    Serve warm or chilled.

    three men in my basement

    Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

That sounds a little dirty, doesn’t it?

Today marks the official day of moving forward with our basement project. Well, maybe it was official when we agreed to the proposal and estimate given to us by our remodeler. Anyway, the drywall guy is here taking measurements and the HVAC guys are here looking at what HVAC guys look at.

We decided to hire someone to coordinate all of this for us because we started a year ago and it’s moving at a snails pace. (Actually, to say that is kind of insulting to snails.) The plan is to have everything finished before my parents come to visit in October.

I’m really looking forward to having a basement. We finished ours in Maryland right before we moved. I never even got a chance to hang out in it. We have a gas fireplace downstairs already installed that we’ve never used. I’m looking forward to cozy nights around the fire this winter.

    S – W – A – P – P – I – N – G!

Ever since Christy posted about Swaptree I’ve been hooked. T and I combined our cd collection over 10 years ago and we still have a bunch of duplicates. Bella and I spent a Saturday afternoon sorting through all of our music. It was really easy to add it to our “have” list. Then on evening I went through our old cassettes and added them to our “want” list. We’ve already traded three cds! Next I think I’m going to tackle movies and maybe some books.

Since we spent the afternoon listening to cds, Bella has been hanging out by the stereo busting a move. Here she is jamming to the Beastie Boys.

Last night I spent way too much time in the kitchen. I haven’t spent that much time making dinner since before Bella was born. T and I have been watching Alton Brown and were amazed at how easy it looked to make gyros. I guess I didn’t realize how much I have mastered making a “quick and easy” dinner. By pre-Bella standards, this was quick and easy, but by post-Bella standards, it was a gourmet meal.

We got our ground lamb at the Farmers’ Market and only had one pound, so I halved the recipe. I just made a smaller loaf and baked it in the waterbath in the oven. (A rotisserie is not a kitchen gadget I really need.) If you like gyros, I highly recommend the recipe. They turned out really good. In fact, they might just be the best gyros I’ve ever had.

We’ll see how today goes. I had feta and a healthy portion of tzatziki sauce. So far Bella seems to be handling it ok, but these days she seems to react to dairy about 24 hours afterward. I’m thinking I’ll make a dairy-free dinner for tonight and save the gyro leftovers for tomorrow just to be safe.

the early bird gets the tomato

    Sunday, August 19th, 2007

One thing that has changed for us since Bella is our Saturday morning routine. We’ve always had lazy Saturday mornings. I think part of it stemmed from working really hard, long hours during the week. Saturday was the first chance we had to just do nothing. (You’d think Friday nights would be better for that, but we’re usually still too wound up.) We’d lay in bed and listen to NPR, get up and make coffee, catch up on email and have either a late breakfast or early lunch. We were never the kind of people who were first in line at the Farmers’ Market or who got that really good deal at a garage sale. If we made it out at all, we were usually left sorting through what was left.*

Now that Bella is up and walking, there’s no time to lounge around in bed. She’ll only hang out with us for so long before she needs to get things done. She’s got books to page through, cups to stack, blocks to sort, carpets to mow and a cat to harass. So we usually get up and get out of the house. I don’t think we’ll ever be the first to a garage sale, but I did get some really nice fabric yesterday for a good price. We also made it to the Farmers’ Market before our favorite vendor ran out of tomatoes.

We’re trying to keep Sunday mornings lazy, though. We eat breakfast together, read the paper and watch the Formula One race (when there is one). Bella’s still pretty much a busy bee, though. Right now she’s mowing the deck. Pretty soon we’ll join her and start getting stuff done. I’m just trying to savor these last few comfortable minutes.

*Why do people always tell you what you missed by coming late? “All the big onions are gone now.” “We had some really cute dresses this morning.” What’s the point? Are they afraid that you are judging them on their small onions? Worried that you might think they didn’t dress their child in really cute stuff? Maybe they’re just jealous because they wish they had a lazy morning, too.

    postcards from england: july 10th

    Friday, August 17th, 2007

It’s late and I have to get up early tomorrow to catch our flight home. I need to write down some details of today because we had an awesome day and I don’t want to forget any of it. We slept in, (again!) and missed breakfast (again!), but the three of us hung out in bed together goofing off until almost 11 am and it was wonderful. M was in a fabulous mood, as she has been for most of the trip.

We got ready and went to an early lunch at a little Italian bistro by the hotel. After that we decided to take Yvonne’s advice and walk around town for the day using the route she suggested. First off was St. James Park. M had her first experience with pigeons, ducks and geese. She loved them all! She and T walked around together (yes, walked!) and visited all of the birds.

After that, we walked over to Buckingham Palace. I was hoping to get a picture of M with the guards, but they all seem to have off today. Oh, well. We circled the palace just to make sure and saw hundreds of people “queueing” up to attend a garden party with the queen. I can’t even begin to tell you about all of the crazy hats. Some of them weren’t even hats, but just a bunch of feathers glued to a comb. One lady had feathers in her hair that were easily three times the size of her head.

Since we couldn’t find any guards, we headed down through the park, past Westminster Abbey, Parliament and Big Ben and crossed the Thames on Westminster Bridge. There was another park where we stopped to feed Bella—not everyone gets to eat her green beans among the roses! We continued along the waterfront and stopped watched some breakdancers. The guys were trying to get everyone in the crowd to clap to the beat. In true Bella form, she waited until we were walking away and then clapped all the way down to Waterloo Bridge.

We did a lot of walking today. I’m afraid I’m losing weight. There is no way I am eating enough to make up for all of the calories I am burning. After a pit stop at the hotel and a quick iChat with my parents, we set off to dinner. We went to another Indian restaurant. We have had so much amazing Indian food on this trip. Every meal seems better than the one before.

Today was a whirlwind day. Writing it all down doesn’t seem to do it justice. The day to us was simply magical. M had a wonderful time. She’s been such a good traveler and has thoroughly enjoyed herself. We’ve had an amazing time, too. Double decker buses don’t seem half as exciting until you watch your child stare up at one in amazement, turn around to you and smile the biggest toothy grin there is.

We’re all packed and ready to head home. It’s back to Lincoln for us. The rest of the pictures are posted in the gallery.
