silverstone?

Friday, March 30th, 2007

It was a hard decision to make, but we’re not going to Indianapolis this year for the Formula One race. Tanuj and Claire are getting married a few weeks later, and it’s just too much travel, too close together. We’ve never missed a US Grand Prix at Indy and we’re kind of sad about it.

But…

…the British Grand Prix is the same weekend and the wedding just happens to be in England. Hmm… I think we’re going to have to go to Silverstone.

thanks, knitters!

My Today Show post is getting quite a few comments. Well, not a lot by some blog standards, but a lot for the lincolnblog! Thank you to the knitters who offered a ride or carpool to one of the nearby Harlot appearances. If any of the events were on the weekend, I might consider it, but during the week it’s just too crazy around here to go off and get all wooly.

It’s a funny thing about those comments; I read the Harlot’s blog entry and didn’t even notice she had linked to me. I just zoomed by the link thinking “Yeah, whatever. I already saw the knitters on the Today Show. How was the rest of the day?” It wasn’t until Christy left me a comment that I realized it. (Yes, a teething baby is kind of like having a newborn again: up all night and really fuzzy during the day.)

Even though I won’t be attending a Harlot appearance, I am very excited about another upcoming knitting event: World Wide Knit in Public Day. The Lincoln Knitters will be celebrating with a spot at the Farmer’s Market in Haymarket on June 9th from 8-12. Nebraska knitters — and those from nearby states — mark your calendars and come join us!

grace’s aces

Hey Maryland lincolnblog readers! May 2oth is a very special day. It’s the Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis in Ellicott City. Our friends Nicole and Matt are organizing a team of walkers called Grace’s Aces for their four-year old daughter, Grace. I’ll never forget the day she was born: Valentine’s Day, 2003 — the day before the big blizzard hit. Now look at her! She’s growing so fast!

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life threatening genetic disease causing mucus to build up and clog some of the major organs in the body, especially in the lungs and pancreas. Currently the median age of survival is only 37 and there is no cure.

We can help, though. We can dig around and find a little something extra next to the dryer lint in our pockets to help CF stand for Cure Found. If you’re interested in helping out with the Ellicott City event, or an event in your area, let me know and I’ll get you in touch with Nicole. If you just want to give that little something next to the dryer lint, you can do so here.

where was I?

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Oh, yeah. About a year and a half ago, I was raving about my new favorite cookbook. Then I got some kind of stomach bug after a big holiday blowout of meals made from the book and I didn’t want to open it up ever again. Until now, that is.

I’ve really been missing Indian food lately, and decided to dive back into experimenting with Keralan cooking. It all started when I discovered some ground beef in our freezer and I was trying to decide what to do with it. I made Beef in Fragrant Coconut Milk and we had it with Turmeric Rice (recipe from my friend Teresa). It was a total meat and potatoes kind of comfort meal. Afterward, I got really excited. I even asked T if he would mind if I made Indian food for dinner the rest of the week. But then things got busy and I didn’t have a lot of time to experiment, so the next meal I made was an old staple (again from Teresa): Spiced Kidney Beans. T made rotis to go with it. Oh, how I wish I could have yogurt! Yesterday I had more time to experiment, so I went back to the Keralan cookbook and made Chickpeas with Onion. I had to substitute regular chickpeas for black chickpeas, and I omitted the coconut slices, but it was still awesome. We served it with Turmeric Rice and rotis.

I think one of the things that makes southern Indian food so different from northern is fresh curry leaves. They give a nutty taste that really can’t be substituted by anything else. There’s a store up by the university that sells them, and I freeze them for future use. They make even the most simple dhal taste exotic. I need to plan my menus for the week, and I’m going to have to include another recipe from this book. I’m officially addicted.

Bella, where does wool come from?

“Baa, Baa, Baa.”

Very good! And what does the sheep say?

“Baa, Baa, Baa.”

did you see the knitters?

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

They were outside of the Today Show. In fact, they are all over NYC today as part of Yarn Harlot’s Represent Event. I so wish I could be there. All those knitters in one place! All the yarn crawls! I guess I will have to settle for the book. I doubt Nebraska will ever make it as a stop on the tour.

why am i still awake?

Friday, March 16th, 2007

I am the only one up right now. I just finished watching Quali. T, M and Chloe are all asleep. The house is quiet. It’s like a little slice of heaven: F1, knitting and silence. Oh, and Kimi… he’s looking pretty good in red. OK. Must get to bed before I turn into a pumpkin.

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
We have been out for three walks in the past two days. The sun and warmth have been intoxicating after a long, windy and cold winter. Everyone is outside. It’s as if the whole neighborhood has awakened from hibernation at the same time. M really seems to like strolling around the neighborhood and I LOVE our Peg Perego. If you are interested, we have the Pliko 3 and it is awesome.

Girls’ Night Out
Last Saturday I went out with some friends for dinner and a show. Dinner was at Dish, which has an amazing menu. I can’t wait to go back when I’m done with all of this dairy stuff so I can try something more sinful than a salad. (The salad was really good, though.) The show was The Monologues* and it was the first time I had seen my friend Christina perform. She did a fantastic job. In fact, the whole cast did. It’s definitely more powerful seeing it live than sitting in your living room watching it on HBO. The performance was a V-Day event.

It’s Been a Long Season Break
T and I can’t wait for Saturday. Actually, practice airs on Thursday night. I wonder how Kimi will look in red.

Growing Like a Weed
M had her 6-month checkup last week and it’s official: she’s growing like a weed. The bouncy seat has been off limits for awhile now, and it looks like the swing is next to go. (As I type this she is reaching up and grabbing the mobile. Must. Get. Leaf. Into. Mouth.) We’ve removed the bassinet from the pack-n-play and will be lowering her crib a notch over the weekend. She’s also very close to sitting up on her own and crawling on all fours. Houston, prepare for lift off!

*It’s nice to know that Lincoln isn’t so conservative and we can host performances like this, even though most folks still seem intimidated by the title.
