happy halloween!
Tuesday, October 31st, 2006wintry weekend
Monday, October 23rd, 2006If you happened to be watching the Nebraska vs. Texas game on Saturday, you might have noticed a few flakes on the field. We had our first snow on Saturday. It wasn’t a big deal—just a few pretty flakes for about an hour. It was a nice backdrop for Knitting Group, though. We had our monthly lunch and TKGA meeting, and Christy brought the most amazing vegan black bean soup—totally dairy free for me (and Mirabella!). It was perfect for a cold, wintry day. T spent the afternoon with Mirabella and dressed her in red to support the Huskers (and Ferrari). Here she is in her fancy red sweater, knit by Joanne, a fellow Lincoln Knitter.

The Huskers played a good game, just not good enough. Massa and Schumacher both drove a really good race, just not good enough. Oh, well. Mirabella still looked cute!
the princess and the split pea
Thursday, October 19th, 2006This going dairy free thing is difficult. Not just because I want cream in my coffee! I want a slice of pizza! I want Indian food!, but because it seems milk products hide in almost everything. My list of things to avoid includes most breads, soups, deli meat, breaded and fried chicken, some crackers, cookies, salad dressing—even non-dairy creamer! There are so many foods I missed while pregnant, and now I can’t eat them all over again.
I planned our meals for this week carefully and read all the labels at the grocery store. I made a big pot of split pea and ham soup for lunches this week and was so excited when I didn’t find any “offending” ingredients in turkey ham. I was surprised because turkey ham, well, it isn’t natural you know. It’s processed just like deli meat. I trusted the label, though, and what did it get me? A screaming banshee!
I’ve been keeping a food diary to track how my meals affect Mirabella, and I couldn’t figure it out. Everything was considered safe, but she was obviously reacting to something. Finally, I decided it must be the split pea soup. I skipped it yesterday and made black beans and rice for lunch instead. You know what? We have peace in our house again. Just like that. Curse you turkey ham and your meaningless ingredient list!
I have a new respect for vegans. I mean, how do you trust that there isn’t milk in your bread? Do you read the labels on spices to make sure there isn’t any added whey? Does that mean you never eat another piece of milk chocolate? Do you only use vinaigrette dressing on your salads? In order to go vegan you must have a passion for the lifestyle. How can you not? Eliminating animal products from your entire diet is hard! It takes a lot of work and effort. Personally, I don’t think I could do it. Rice milk in my morning coffee? Forget about it!
happy bella
Friday, October 13th, 2006Long story short: we’ve been fussy over here for the past few weeks and after visiting with Mirabella’s pediatrician and the lactation consultant at MilkWorks, I’ve removed all dairy, soy and beef from my diet. After 48 hours, Mirabella is definitely happier.
Is it any wonder why my ribs hurt so much in my last trimester (and why I didn’t get much sleep)?
Sorry for the poor quality. T was just goofing off with the camera. We weren’t planning to post this on the blog, but it’s too cute not to share!
getting settled
Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006It seems like yesterday we were in the hospital. The past five weeks have been a blur. That’s right—five weeks! Can you believe it? The past few days I’ve been trying to get my mommy “sea legs” now that the grandparents have gone home. I have to completely redo my daily routine to coordinate work, laundry, meals (ours and Mirabella’s), and sleep. It’s been good to get back in front of the computer, although the amount of emails in my inbox is frightening, and I’ve gone through most of the piles of stuff on my desk. This week is going to be all about getting some order back into our lives—as much order as you can have living with a five week old.
